Disco Roll (2000s)
In the year 2000, the Rotary Club of Morialta met June and her son Damien at a Christmas Party for CARA (Community Accommodation and Respite Agency) at Woodville, where the Club was providing a BBQ. The Club heard that June was going to start a Disco for young people with disabilities and their families and, and our club offered to assist by paying for a DJ, the cost of hiring a venue, and providing a BBQ.
The first Disco was held in January 2001, followed by another in November 2001. Fifty people attended the first Disco this increased to around 200 at future events.
June and her family and friends spent months preparing the Discos, supported by volunteers from our club. June even decorated the hall each year with decorations she has made herself. All this while responsible for the care of her now adult son Damien, who lives with her.
The final Disco Roll took place in November 2010, and our club transitioned to supporting STAR Volunteering to run their own disco.
Rotary Club of Morialta were proud to award June a Paul Harris Fellowship.
