t’s truly encouraging to witness how the Rotary theme for 2025–2026 “Unite for Good” is not just a slogan, but a lived philosophy within our club’s activities. From community outreach to member engagement and advocacy efforts, the spirit of this year’s theme resonates throughout everything we do. Whether it's through welcoming new members like Bianca Paterson, collaborating with sister clubs, or championing initiatives like “Lift the Lid on Mental Health” or “Rotary Says No to Domestic Violence,” we are showing that our commitment to service and impact is both intentional and inspiring.

Welcoming Bianca Paterson to the Rotary Club of Morialta

At our Wednesday evening meeting on 23rd July 2025, we were delighted to officially welcome Bianca Paterson as a member of the Rotary Club of Morialta.

Bianca brings a depth of expertise through her work as a criminal defence lawyer, with a strong focus on family violence matters. Her professional background and commitment to justice make her a valuable addition to our club, particularly in support of our “Rotary Says No to Domestic Violence” initiative.

We look forward to the insights and passion Bianca will contribute as we continue working together to create meaningful change in our community.

We’re excited to strengthen our connection with the Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise (RCMS) through a series of thoughtful steps designed to build visibility and foster collaboration as they adapt to holding their 3^rd Tuesday of the Month as an evening meeting at the Tower Hotel.

🔔 Rotary Club of Morialta’s Meeting Bell

To honour Rotary tradition and signal the start of meaningful gatherings, the Rotary Club of Morialta’s meeting bell will be used by Rotary Club of Magill sunrise for their meetings at the Tower Hotel—bringing a sense of ceremony and unity to each meeting.

🖼️ Showcasing Rotary Pride

The Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise will store a pull-up banner in the Rotary storage area at the Tower Hotel so that it can be displayed in the meeting room, serving as a visual representation of the club’s values and presence. This ensures visitors and members alike are reminded of the club’s ongoing contributions to the local community.

📌 Rotary Wheel Display

The Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise will have a printed Rotary wheel, encased in a clear plastic stand, Stored at the Tower Hotel.

These steps—though small—are part of a larger effort to celebrate our Rotary partnerships and create welcoming, inspiring spaces for Rotary members and guests alike.

Making an Impact: From Morialta to the World

Our fundraising efforts continue to translate into real-world impact — and this month, two important humanitarian organisations will benefit from the generosity of our club and community.

🔹 Doctors Without Borders will receive a $2,900 donation, made up of:

$1,900 — the remaining funds from our Club’s international budget from last Rotary year

$1,000 — a generous personal donation from Dr Yasmine Abdelhamid, daughter of our own Adel Abdelhamid

🔹 The Fred Hollows Foundation will receive a $1,000 donation, composed of:

$500 — from our Club’s allocated budget

$500 — again generously donated by Dr Yasmine Abdelhamid

Thanks to corporate matching through Fred Hollows’ partners, that $500 will be quadrupled — turning into $2,000 towards life-changing cataract surgeries.

These acts of giving remind us: our efforts go far beyond sausages and meetings. They restore sight, provide emergency medical care, and change lives.

Thank you to Judi and Graeme for facilitating these donations, and a heartfelt thank you to Dr Yasmine Abdelhamid for her generosity and commitment to humanitarian work.

Together, we’re making a difference.

Community Service

Community Service in Action: Kiosks, Workshops & BBQs!

The Community Service team continues to make a strong impact under the leadership of Director Graeme Packer. Our Community Workshop remains a vibrant hub, engaging 60+ members weekly across four sessions. Although expansion is limited by supervisor availability, the team is exploring solar panels and improved security in partnership with Council.

Work has begun on the Folktale Trail Storybook Project, with Stage 1 approved and materials already being prepared. Stage 2 is expected to begin in August pending Council resourcing.

Our Kiosk remains the club’s primary fundraiser, but more hands are needed. Members, even those with limited availability, are encouraged to support busy shifts. Plans for solar panels and a new evaporative unit are on hold until the kiosk redesign progresses.

We also passed a recent food safety audit and are exploring the installation of new drink refill stations.

Looking ahead, the committee has a packed Fundraising Events Calendar, including:

Athelstone Basketball BBQ (21 Sept)

Diwali (1 Nov), MLM markets, Carols, Tour Down Under, and more!

A new BBQ trailer is also under discussion — ideas welcome!

International Service

- Judi Brown🌏

The International Committee had a standout year in 2024–25, successfully delivering all six of its strategic goals. Key highlights include:

✅ PNG Midwifery Leadership Project
The flagship international initiative continues to deliver powerful impact, with Workshop 5 held in April welcoming 14 PNG and 7 Australian midwives. The project has received widespread recognition, including features in Rotary International media. A final workshop is planned for April 2026 in Port Moresby, with RC Port Moresby pledging K50,000.

✅ Ukraine – New Dawn Project
Ongoing club support continues to make a real difference for families and communities in southern Ukraine. Morialta remains an active partner in this long-running humanitarian effort.

✅ New Partnerships
The committee is actively exploring new opportunities in Nepal and Uganda. We remain responsive to international needs as they arise.

✅ Rotary Foundation
Our club continues to support the Foundation financially and through awareness-raising, with a donation already budgeted for 2025–26.

✅ Media & Promotion
Our international work is gaining profile — with a major media release from Rotary International due in September. The PNG project was also presented at District Conference and the Club Handover.

✅ Friendship with RC Usa, Japan
After initial hesitation, our long-time friends in Usa, Japan, have recommitted to continuing the partnership — though their October visit is now postponed.

It’s easy to assume that our Rotary dues fund all the amazing projects we support — but they don’t. This is one of the most common misconceptions in Rotary. The amount you pay in your dues includes all of the below.

Here’s the real story:

✅ Rotary International Dues

USD $82 per year (or USD $41 every 6 months)

This funds the global Rotary infrastructure — the systems and people that keep us connected in over 200 countries and 46,000+ clubs. It covers:

Global governance and leadership
Member platforms like My Rotary and the Learning Center
The Grant Center
Staff, compliance, legal support
Brand and digital systems

Think of this as the engine room that keeps Rotary moving globally. Without it, we couldn’t run Youth Exchanges, global conventions, or apply for grants.

✅ District Dues

AUD $100–150 per year (varies by district)

This powers the regional support network — everything our District does to help clubs thrive, including:

Club training and development
Insurance and risk coverage
District communications and websites
Leadership support and events

It’s how we stay connected and supported at the regional level.

✅ Club Dues

AUD $100–300 per year (set by our club, this year it is $100)

These are used to run our own club effectively and vibrantly. They help cover:

Venue and speaker costs
Club administration
Member engagement activities
Local promotions and small projects

My dad recently upgraded his phone — a monumental event, considering he still refers to any app as “The Google.”

A week later, I got a text from him that said:

“Having trouble with email. Please fix. Love, Dad.”

I texted back:

“What exactly is the problem?”

He replied:

“I tried yelling at it and shaking the phone. Nothing happened.”

I told him to try turning it off and on again.

He said, “You mean the phone or the yelling?”

Somewhere out there, my dad is still blaming poor Wi-Fi for spelling errors.
